La Traviata (2005)

Music: Giuseppe Verdi

Libretto: Francesco Maria Piave

Director: Willy Decker

Conductor: Carlo Rizzi

Cast : Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón, Thomas Hampson

Orchestra: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

This recording of Verdi‘s La Traviata from the 2005 Salzburg Festival captures the triumphal performance not only of Anna Netrebko as the tragic Violetta, but also of Rolando Villazón as her lover Alfredo.  Willy Decker‘s stark, elegantly stylish stage production, complimented by Wolfgang Gussmann’s sets and costumes make Netrebko the center of attention at all times.

The three-act opera depicts the sorrowful love story of courtesan Violetta and bourgeois Alfredo. In spite of Violetta’s sacrifice of fame and fortune, she is not accepted by Alfredo’s father and is forced to leave her lover. Alfredo is distraught, believing that Violetta has left him out of self-interest. Truth is only revealed at Violetta’s sick bed, but it is too late.
