Lao She’s 1956 drama Teahouse is a treasure of modern Chinese theatre. Tracing China’s social upheavals from the failed Hundred Days’ Reform of 1898 to the end of World War II through the stories of a teahouse proprietor and his customers, the play captures the dark undercurrents and many facets of Chinese society in the early 20th century. Teahouse patrons range from imperial bannermen to businessmen, eunuchs, spies, oracles, soldiers, scholars, prostitutes, beggars and policemen. PLUS takes participants behind the scenes of this complex production to view the diverse costumes and enormous set first-hand, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the actors and the Sichuan People’s Art Theatre up-close!
The Hong Kong Arts Festival has been informed by the Sichuan People’s Art Theatre that their production of Teahouse will not be staged at the 48th Hong Kong Arts Festival as originally planned. As a result, the PLUS programme Sichuan People's Art Theatre Teahouse Backstage Tour, originally scheduled on 16 Feb 2020 (Sun) will be cancelled.
